On February 7th in 1995 - U.S. President Clinton invited the two sides of the major league baseball strike to the White House in an effort to reach an agreement. The two sides did not resolve the issue that day.
On February 7th in 2000 - California's legislature declared that February 13 would be "Charels M. Schulz Day."
On February 7th in 2011 - A court in Milan freed a former Guantanamo inmate, citing his time served at the Guantanamo prison. Tunisian Adel Ben Mabrouk was transferred to Italy in November 2009 as part of the US’s bid to shut down the prison. Mabrouk was convicted Monday of associating with terrorists, which gave him a two-year suspended sentence. His lawyer and prosecutors made a joint appeal to the judge to take in consideration the nine years Mabrouk spent in Guantanamo in “inhumane conditions.”
On February 7th in 2011 - The US ambassador to Pakistan pressed the country’s president Asif Ali Zardari to free an American citizen detained after he fatally shot two men trying to rob him in the eastern city of Lahore. The US ambassador delivered the message during his meeting with Pakistan’s president in Islamabad on Monday. The US says Raymond Allen Davis has diplomatic immunity and should not have been held in custody.
On February 7th in 2011 - Georgian Culture Minister Nikoloz Rurua has denounced rumors that songs in Russian were banned from being performed in the country’s restaurants. “It’s nonsense,” he said. Reports that Russian songs had been prohibited in Georgia earlier appeared in Russian media and raised eyebrows as the relations between the two countries remain strained after the military conflict in 2008.
