On June 6th in 2008 The US Labor Dept. said the nation's unemployment rate jumped to 5.5 percent in May, the biggest monthly rise since 1986, as nervous employers cut 49,000 jobs.

On June 6th in 2008 Crude oil settled up $10.75 at a record $138.54 on the NY Mercantile Exchange.

On June 6th in 2009 President Barack Obama at Omaha Beach, France, paid tribute to the Allies' 1944 D-Day landings, an invasion that turned the tide of World War II and cemented the trans-Atlantic alliance.

On June 6th in 2010 US Defense Secretary Robert Gates hand delivered a letter from Pres. Obama to Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev during a meeting to improve relations with the former Soviet republic that helps move supplies and soldiers to the U.S. led war in landlocked Afghanistan.

On June 6th in 2011 The U.S. Senate confirmed lawyer Donald Verrilli Jr. as the new Solicitor-General, replacing Elena Kagan, who was appointed to the US Supreme Court. Verrilli most recently served as Deputy Counsel to President Obama.

On June 6th in 2011 The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that universities in California, as well as those in eleven other states which have similar laws, may continue to offer the lower in-state tuition rate to high school graduates who are illegal immigrants.
