On February 16th in 1741 - Benjamin Franklin began publishing America’s second magazine, "The General Magazine and Historical Chronicle".

 On February 16th in 1760 - 23 Native American hostages from the Cherokee Nation were murdered in Fort Prince George, SC

 On February 16th in 1804 - Lt Stephen Decatur raids Tripoli Harbor & burns Navy frigate "Philadelphia" after pirates seized it

 On February 16th in 1838 - Kentucky passes law permitting women to attend school under conditions

 On February 16th in 1840 - American Charles Wilkes discovers Shackleton Ice Shelf, Antarctica

 On February 16th in 1857 - The National Deaf Mute College was incorporated in Washington, DC. It was the first school in the world for advanced education of the deaf. The school was later renamed Gallaudet College.

 On February 16th in 1862 - During the U.S. Civil War, about 1,400 Confederate soldiers surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Donelson, TN.
