On February 9th in 1933 - The U.S. Congress began its 100 days of enacting New Deal legislation.

On February 9th in 1942 - The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff held its first formal meeting to coordinate military strategy during World War II.

On February 9th in 1943 - FDR ordered a minimal 48 hour work week in war industry.

On February 9th in 1943 - During World War II, the battle of Guadalcanal ended with an American victory over Japanese forces.

On February 9th in 1945 - During World War II, U.S. B-29 bombers launched incendiary bomb attacks against Japan.

On February 9th in 1950 - In a speech at the Republican Women's Club in Wheeling, W. Va., Senator Joseph McCarthy, R-Wis., charged the State Department was riddled with Communists and that he had a list of them. He asserted that Sec. of State Dean Acheson knew this and refused to do anything about it. McCarthy said there were 205 communists working in the US State Dept.This was the beginning of "McCarthyism."
