On February 5th in 1631 - Rhode Island, founder, Roger Williams arrives in Boston from England

On February 5th in 1644 - 1st US livestock branding law passed, by Connecticut

On February 5th in 1777 - Georgia becomes 1st US state to abolish both entail & primogeniture (a feudal rule by which the real estate was passed to the eldest son)

On February 5th in 1778 - Articles of Confederation ratified by 1st state, South Carolina

On February 5th in 1783 - Sweden recognizes US independence

On February 5th in 1846 - "The Oregon Spectator", based in Oregon City, became the first newspaper published on the Pacific coast.
