On February 13th in 1935 - In Flemington, New Jersey, a jury found Bruno Richard Hauptmann guilty of the kidnapping and death of the infant son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh. Hauptmann was later executed for the crimes.
On February 13th in 1936 - The first US Social Security checks were put in the mail. The Social Security Administration had started assigning numbers earlier this year.
On February 13th in 1950 - A US Air Force B-36 crashed near the coast of northern British Columbia during a simulated nuclear attack on San Francisco. 12 of 17 men on board survived. A Mark 4 bomb, which lacked a plutonium core needed for a nuclear blast, was dropped over the ocean before the plane crashed.
On February 13th in 1953 - Pope Pius XII asked the U.S. to grant clemency to convicted spies Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. Both were later executed on June 19th, 1953.
On February 13th in 1968 - The US sent 10,500 more combat troops to Vietnam.
On February 13th in 1971 - South Vietnamese troops invaded Laos. They were backed by U.S. air and artillery support.
