On February 13th in 1837 - The New York flour riots broke out. The riots were over the high flour prices inthe city.

On February 13th in 1861 - Abraham Lincoln was declared President.

On February 13th in 1862 - Four-day Battle of Fort Donelson, Tenn., began. General Grant said, "What determined my attack on Donelson was as much the knowledge I had gained of its commanders in Mexico as anything else."

On February 13th in 1865 - The Confederacy approved the recruitment of slaves as soldiers, as long as the approval of their owners was gained.

On February 13th in 1866 - Jesse James took part in his first recorded James-Younger Gang bank holdup with a dozen former Southern guerrilla soldiers, including Frank James and Cole Younger, held up the Clay County Savings Association in Liberty, Missouri. They made off with $15,000.

On February 13th in 1889 - Norman Coleman became the first US Secretary of Agriculture.
