On January 14th in 1873 - Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback elected to US Senate though never gaining his seat. Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback (Born May 10, 1837) was a publisher and politician, a Union Army officer, and the first person of African descent to become Governor of a US state (Pinchback served as the 24th Governor of Louisiana for 15 days). He was born a free man in Georgia
On January 14th in 1878 - US Supreme court rules race separation on trains unconstitutional

On January 14th in 1943 - U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first U.S. President to fly in an airplane while in office. He flew from Miami, FL, to French Morocco where he met with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to discuss World War II.
On January 14th in 1954 - The Hudson Motor Car Company merged with Nash-Kelvinator. The new company was called the American Motors Corporation.
