On August 5th in 1962 - Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her home. The "probable suicide" was caused by an overdose of sleeping pills. Monroe was 36 at the time of her death.

On August 5th in 1964 - The USS Constellation and Ticonderoga launched airstrikes against North Vietnamese oil facilities and naval vessels. The attacks were in retaliation for the Gulf of Tonkin incidents on August 2 and 4.

On August 5th in 1966 - The United States rejected claims that a Soviet ship had been hit by bullets during a raid on Haiphong on August 2.

On August 5th in 1974 - The US Congress placed a $1 billion ceiling on military aid to South Vietnam for 1974.

On August 5th in 1974 - President Nixon said that he expected to be impeached. Nixon had ordered the investigation into the Watergate break-in to halt.

On August 5th in 1990 - President Bush angrily denounced the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
