On August 5th in 1861 - US levies its 1st Income Tax (3% of incomes over $800)

On August 5th in 1862 - The Confederates drove a Union force back into Baton Rouge from the North.

On August 5th in 1862 - Battle of Baton Rouge, LA

On August 5th in 1864 - Union General William T. Sherman declared that John Schofield was senior to John Palmer. An issue had arisen the day before and Palmer had not carried out orders at Utoy Creek. Palmer was resigned and returned to Illinois.

On August 5th in 1864 - Union Admiral David Farragut led his flotilla to victory over the Confederates at Mobile, Alabama. The Farragut quote "Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead!" was made during this battle. Although the authenticity of the quote is questionable.

On August 5th in 1945 - On Tinian Island, "Little Boy" was loaded on the B-29 Enola Gay.
