On February 22nd in 1864 - Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated a Union force three times the size of his army. The battle helped to end Union General William T. Sherman's movement in Alabama.
On February 22nd in 1864 - Union troops fought off an attack north of West Point. Union General William Sooy Smith retreated back to Memphis due to another Confederate force blocking his way to Meridian. This battle forced Union General Sherman to return to Vicksburg.
On February 22nd in 1865 - In the U.S., Tennessee adopted a new constitution that abolished slavery.
On February 22nd in 1885 - The Washington Monument was officially dedicated in Washington, DC. It opened to the public in 1889.
