On December 29th in 1849 Gas lights was installed and switched on for the first time in the White House.
On December 29th in 1852 Emma Snodgrass was arrested in Boston for wearing pants.
On December 29th in 1890 The massacre of Native American Indians, considered the final battle of the American Indian Wars, took place at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota at the hands of Colonel James W. Forsyth of the 7th Cavalry. Seventy-year-old Sioux chief Big Foot was killed by the 7th U.S. Cavalry during the massacre at Wounded Knee. Three days later his body was found frozen where he had been killed. The South Dakota reservation had been left in disarray when Sitting Bull was killed on December 15. Chief Big Foot attempted to lead his tribe away from the reservation on December 28. Chief Big Foot and his followers were surrounded by 500 7th Cavalry troops equipped with Hotchkiss rapid fire guns. During a six hour period on the next morning 146 Sioux men. 47 women and children who attempted to run from the battle were hunted down and killed as far away as 2 miles from the battle field. The 7th Cavalry lost 25 men during the battle, most to friendly fire.
On December 29th in 1940 In a radio interview, President Roosevelt proclaimed the US is the ‘Arsenal of Democracy.’
On December 29th in 1944 US Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe responded with "Nuts" when Germany demanded that he surrender the encircled city of Bastogne.
