On August 30th in 1996 The California Legislature sent a bill to Gov. Wilson that would mandate chemical castration of child molesters.
On August 30th in 2000 President Clinton stopped in Colombia and pledged that US aid would not lead to military escalation in the drug war. The recent $1.5 billion military aid package was part of a broader $7.5 billion Colombian plan to fight drugs, help refugees and strengthen government institutions.
On August 30th in 2002 The WTO ruled that the EU can impose $4 billion in penalties on the US because of an American tax break that promotes exports. The EU planned to give the US time to change the law.
On August 30th in 2004 Republicans opened their convention in NYC with speeches by Rudolph Giuliani and Sen. John McCain. They labeled Democratic Senator John Kerry a shift-in-the-wind campaigner unworthy of the White House and lavished praise on President Bush as a steady, decisive leader. Pres. Bush ignited a Democratic inferno of criticism by suggesting on NBC's "Today" show that an all-out victory against terrorism might not be possible.
On August 30th in 2005 A US Congressional study said the US is the largest supplier of weapons to developing nations, delivering more than $9.6 billion in arms to Near East and Asian countries last year.
