On August 29th in 1758 New Jersey Legislature formed the 1st Indian reservation.

On August 29th in 1776 General George Washington retreated during the night from Long Island to New York City.

On August 29th in 1786 Shay’s Rebellion began in Springfield, Massachusetts. Daniel Shay led a rebellion in Massachusetts to protest the seizure of property for the non-payment of debt. Shay was a Revolutionary War veteran was protesting a tax increase that was required to be paid in cash. The veteran farmers of the time relied on barter and were not able to vote as they owned insufficient land to gain the voting rights of the day. The taxes were to pay off the debts from the Revolutionary War, and those who couldn't pay were evicted from the land they fought to defend or sent to prison.

On August 29th in 1862 The US Bureau of Engraving & Printing began operation.

On August 29th in 1862 Union General John Pope’s army was defeated by a smaller Confederate force at the Second Battle of Bull Run.
