On May 20th in 1861 The capital of the Confederacy was moved from Montgomery, Ala., to Richmond, Va. 

On May 20th in 1862 President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, providing 250 million acres of free land to settlers in the West. It officially opened the Nebraska territory for settlement, leading to statehood in 1867. The US government passed the Homestead Act to stop the spread of slavery to the Western territories. Public land was awarded to any head of a family on condition that the settlers improve the land and live there for 5 years.

On May 20th in 1864 Spotsylvania-campaign ended after 10,920 were killed or injured person.

On May 20th in 1868 The Republican National Convention met in Chicago and nominated Grant.

On May 20th in 1959 Japanese-Americans regained their citizenship.

On May 20th in 1961 A mob attacked a busload of "Freedom Riders" in Montgomery, Ala., prompting the federal government to send in U.S. marshals to restore order.
