On May 20th in 1969 U.S. troops of the 101st Airborne Division and South Vietnamese forces captured Ap Bia Mountain, Hill 937, after nine days of fighting entrenched North Vietnamese forces. Ap Bia was referred to as Hamburger Hill by the Americans, following one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. 

On May 20th in 1971 The US Congress cancelled the supersonic SST airplane program.

On May 20th in 1974 Judge John Sirica ordered President Nixon to turn over tapes and records of 64 White House conversations regarding Watergate.

On May 20th in 1985 US began broadcasts to Cuba on Radio Marti.

On May 20th in 1990 The Hubble Space Telescope sent back its first photographs. 

On May 20th in 1995 President Clinton announced that the two-block stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House would be permanently closed to motor vehicles as a security measure.
