On May 1st in 1996 PLO leader Yasser Arafat received a statesman's welcome at the White House, where he met with President Clinton for 45 minutes, then lashed out at Israel for keeping its borders closed to Palestinian workers.

On May 1st in 1999 President Clinton imposed a trade embargo on Serbia that excepted only food and medicine.

On May 1st in 1999 The NRA held its annual convention in Denver 11 days after the Columbine High School shootings. Some 2,500 attended as 7,000 people protested outside.

On May 1st in 2000 The US government began allowing civilian GPS receivers to pick up more accurate satellite signals.

On May 1st in 2000 A US State Dept. annual report on efforts to combat terrorism listed Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria as state sponsors for terrorism. The report indicated a shift from the Middle East to South Asia with Afghanistan and Pakistan listed as threatening.

On May 1st in 2001 President Bush committed the US to a missile defense shield. He also presented his case for withdrawing from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia.
