On May 11th in 1943 During World War II, American forces landed on Japanese-held Attu island in the Aleutians; the Americans took the island 19 days later.

On May 11th in 1944 Allied forces launched a major offensive against German lines in Italy.

On May 11th in 1945 Kiyoshi Ogawa, Japanese pilot, crashed his plane into the US carrier Bunker Hill near Okinawa. 496 Americans died with him and the ship was knocked out of the war.

On May 11th in 1962 US sent troops to Thailand. 

On May 11th in 1963 Racial bomb attacks took place in Birmingham, Alabama.

On May 11th in 1965 The US 10th fighter Bomber F105D was shot down at Xien Khouong, Laos.
