On April 18th in 2008 Former US Pres. Jimmy Carter arrived in Syria where he met Pres. Bashar Assad, the political leader of the militant Palestinian Hamas group and Syrian businessmen.
On April 18th in 2009 The 34-nation weekend Summit of the Americas opened in Trinidad. Cuba, as the region's only non-democracy, was not invited. President Obama signaled he was ready to accept Cuban President Raul Castro's proposal of talks on issues once off-limits for Havana, including the scores of political prisoners held by the communist government.
On April 18th in 2012 Three US Secret Service employees lost their jobs with the agency over the prostitution scandal in Colombia. One, a supervisor who was allowed to retire, another agreed to resign and a third was recommended for dismissal. The agency was investigating allegations of misconduct by 11 of its employees. The agents and 10 military personnel accused of engaging in a night of heavy drinking and hiring 20 prostitutes on April 11 in advance of President Barack Obama’s visit to the Colombian city of Cartagena.
