On April 17th in 1790 Benjamin Franklin (born 1706), American statesman, died in Philadelphia at age 84.

On April 17th in 1824 Russia abandoned all North American claims south of 54' 40'. 

On April 17th in 1837 J. Pierpont Morgan (d.1913), American financier, was born in Hartford, Conn. J.P. Mogan later owned U.S. Steel and International Harvester.

On April 17th in 1861 The Virginia State Convention voted to secede from the Union. Virginia became the eighth state to secede from the Union and moved troops to take over National Capital. Federal troops were rushed down the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal and arrived in time to stop Confederate troops from taking Washington D.C. The Wheeling Conventions declared Virginia’s secession from the Union unconstitutional and named Francis H. Pierpont governor of the Reorganized Government of Virginia, which was quickly recognized by the federal government.

On April 17th in 1864 There was a bread revolt in Savannah, Georgia.

On April 17th in 1945 The US Army raided factory in Stassfurt, Germany, and found some 1,100 tons of ore, some in the form of uranium oxide, a basic material of atomic bombs. It was part of mission Alsos, intended to track down Germany's atomic bomb project and nuclear scientists.
