On April 27th in 2009 Five members of the US Congress were arrested while protesting the expulsion of aid groups from Darfur in front of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, DC. The included Democratic Reps. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, John Lewis of Georgia, Donna Edwards of Maryland and Lynn Woolsey of California.

On April 27th in 2009 General Motors Corp. said it will cut 21,000 US factory jobs by next year, phase out its storied Pontiac brand and ask the government to take more than half its stock in exchange for half of GM's government debt as part of a major restructuring that would leave current shareholders holding just 1 percent of the company.

On April 27th in 2011 President Barack Obama produced a Hawaii birth certificate in an attempt to bury the issue of where he was born.

On April 27th in 2011 Obama administration officials said Leon Panetta (72) would be named as the new US Sec. of Defense, Gen. David Petraeus would head the CIA and that Gen. John Allen would assume military command in Afghanistan.

On April 27th in 2011 US Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke held his inaugural post-policy meeting news conference. The Federal Reserve committed to keep interest rates low.

On April 27th in 2011 The Indiana state House approved a bill to cut $3 million in federal money for the Planned Parenthood organization. The state Senate approved the bill earlier that month. Rep. Gov. Mitch Daniels signed the bill on May 10.
