On February 1st in 1788 - Isaac Briggs and William Longstreet patented the steamboat.
On February 1st in 1790 - The U.S. Supreme Court convened for the first time in New York City.
On February 1st in 1779 - Delaware became the twelfth state to ratify the Articles of Confederation.
On February 1st in 1781 - American Brigadier General William Lee Davidson died in combat while attempting to prevent General Charles Cornwallis’ army from crossing the Catawba River in Mecklenburg County, NC. Davidson College is named in his honor. (Battle of Cowan's Ford)
On February 1st in 1842 - In New York City, the "City Despatch Post" began operations. It was a private company that was the first to introduce adhesive postage stamps in the western hemisphere. The company was bought by the U.S. government a few months later and renamed "United States City Despatch Post."
On February 1st in 1861 - Texas became the seventh state to secede from the Union. The state convention voted 166 to 8 in favor of the measure.
On February 1st in 1862 - "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," by Julia Ward Howe was first published in the "Atlantic Monthly."
