On January 31st in 1893 - The trademark "Coca-Cola" was first registered in the United States Patent Office.

On January 31st in 1917 - Germany announced its policy of unrestricted submarine warfare.

On January 31st in 1918 - In Germany, a state of siege was declared and the ringleaders of strikes were arrested and court-martialed. About 150 were imprisoned and 50,000 more were drafted into the army and sent to the front.

On January 31st in 1930 - U.S. Navy Lt. Ralph S. Barnaby became the first glider pilot to have his craft released from a dirigible, a large blimp, at Lakehurst, NJ.
