On January 30th in 1649 - England's King Charles I was beheaded.

On January 30th in 1777 - American commander Major General William Heath and his army of 6,000 abandoned their siege on Fort Independence, in Bronx County, New York.

On January 30th in 1777 - General George Washington put Major General Israel Putnam in command of all Patriot troops in New York. Putnam was charged with the defense of the city and its water routes.

On January 30th in 1790 - The first purpose-built lifeboat was launched on the River Tyne.

On January 30th in 1798 - The first brawl in the U.S. House of Representatives took place. Congressmen Matthew Lyon and Roger Griswold fought on the House floor.

On January 30th in 1844 - Richard Theodore Greener became the first African American to graduate from Harvard University.
