On December 9th in 1999 - The U.S. announced that it was expelling a Russian diplomat that had been caught gathering information with an eavesdropping device at the U.S. State Department.

On December 9th in 2000 - The U.S. Supreme Court ordered a temporary halt in the Florida presidential vote count. 

On December 9th in 2002 - United Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after losing $4 billion in the previous two years. It was the sixth largest bankruptcy filing.

On December 9th in 2009 - U.S. President Barack Obama became only the third sitting president to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. In awarding the prize to Obama, the Nobel panel cited his call for a world free of nuclear weapons, for a more engaged U.S. role in combating global warming, for his support of the United Nations and multilateral diplomacy and for broadly capturing the attention of the world and giving its people "hope."

On December 9th in  2013 - AMR Corporation and US Airways Group completed a merger and was listed on the NASDAQ as American Airlines Group, Inc.
