On February 9th in 1989 - In the US, a strike forced Eastern Airlines into bankruptcy.

On February 9th in 1989 - President George H.W. Bush urged for a mandatory death penalty in drug-related killings.

On February 9th in 1989 - President Bush, in his first major speech to Congress, proposed a $1.16 trillion "common sense" budget for fiscal 1990.

On February 9th in 1990 - Dr. Antonia Novello was sworn in as the first female and Hispanic surgeon general.
