On February 8th in 1968 - Robert F. Kennedy said that the US cannot win the Vietnam War.

On February 8th in 1968 - At South Carolina State 3 black students were killed in a confrontation with highway patrolmen in Orangeburg, during a civil rights protest against a whites-only bowling alley. Nearly 50 were injured in the Orangeburg Massacre during confrontations with the National Guard.

On February 8th in 1971 - The Nasdaq stock-market index, a unit of the National Association of Securities Dealers, went live under the leadership of Gordon Macklin

On February 8th in 1971 - South Vietnamese ground forces, backed by American air power, began Operation Lam Son 719, a 17,000 man incursion into Laos that ended three weeks later in a disaster.
