On February 14th in 1903 - US Congress created the Department of Commerce and Labor to help stabilize the economy. It was divided into separate departments of Commerce and Labor in 1913.

On February 14th in 1912 - Arizona was admitted as the 48th US state.

On February 14th in 1919 - President Woodrow Wilson presented the draft of the covenant for the Leauge of Nations that had been established two weeks earlier.

On February 14th in 1920 - The League of Women Voters was founded in Chicago. The first president of the organization was Maude Wood Park.

On February 14th in 1921 - The Literary Review faced obscenity charges in NY for publishing "Ulysses" by James Joyce.

On February 14th in 1929 - The "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" took place in Chicago, IL. Seven gangsters who were rivals of Al Capone were killed.
