On January 22nd in 1879 - James Shields began a term as a Senator from Missouri. He had previously served Illinois and Minnesota. He was the first Senator to serve three states.

On January 22nd in 1889 - The Columbia Phonograph Company was formed in Washington, DC.

On January 22nd in 1895 - The National Association of Manufacturers was organized in Cincinnati, OH.

On January 22nd in 1917 - President Wilson pleaded for an end to war in Europe, calling for "peace without victory." America entered the war the following April.

On January 22nd in 1944 - Allied forces began landing at Anzio, Italy, during World War II.

On January 22nd in 1946 - President Truman established the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) in an effort to have a sound, well-organized intelligence system, both in the present and in the future
