On February 11th in 1752 - The Pennsylvania Hospital opened as the very first hospital in America.

On February 11th in 1776 - In Georgia, British Royal Governor Sir James Wright escaped from his residence in Savanah. He was taken into custody on January 18 and placed under house arrest by Patriots.

On February 11th in 1808 - Judge Jesse Fell experimented by burning anthracite coal to keep his house warm. He successfully showed how clean the coal burned and how cheaply it could be used as a heating fuel.

On February 11th in 1812 - The term "gerrymandering" had its beginning when the governor of Massachusetts, Elbridge Gerry, signed a redistricting law that favored his party.

On February 11th in 1861 - President-elect Abraham Lincoln left his home in Springfield, Illinois, on his journey to Washington.
