On December 24th in 1814 Dec 24, The Treaty of Ghent between the United States and Great Britain, terminating the War of 1812, was signed at Ghent, Belgium. The news did not reach the United States until two weeks later (after the decisive American victory at New Orleans). The treaty, signed by John Quincy Adams for the US, committed the US and Britain "to use their best endeavors" to end the Atlantic slave trade.

On December 24th in 1851 Dec 24, Fire devastated the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., destroying approximately 35,000 of the volumes that the library held.

On December 24th in 1860 Dec 24, South Carolina issued a “Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina.”

On December 24th in 1861 Dec 24, The USS Gem of the Sea destroyed the British blockade runner Prince of Wales off the coast at Georgetown, S.C.

On December 24th in 1862 Dec 24, the USS New Era delivered artillery to support Federal troops at Columbus, Ky.
