On December 23rd in 1783 George Washington returned home to Mount Vernon, after the disbanding of his army following the Revolutionary War and resigned as commander in chief of the Continental Army. "Having now finished the work assigned to me, I retire from the great theater of action; and bidding an affectionate farewell to this august body, under whose orders I have so long acted, I here offer my commission, and take any leave of all the employments of public life."
On December 23rd in 1788 Maryland voted to cede a 100-square-mile area for the seat of the national government; about two-thirds of the area became the District of Columbia.
