On September 5th in 2008 U.S. bank regulators shut down Silver State Bank, saying the Nevada bank failed because of losses on soured loans, mainly in commercial real estate and land development. It was the 11th failure of the year of a federally insured bank.

On September 5th in 2008 The Iraqi government reacted sharply to published allegations that the US spied on Iraq's PM Maliki, warning that future ties with the United States could be in jeopardy if the report were true.
