On August 31st in 2011 The US Justice Dept. sued to block AT&T’s proposed $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile, saying the deal would lessen competition in the wireless market.
On August 31st in 2011 In Fremont, Ca., solar-cell maker Solyndra announced that it will close its remaining plant, layoff 1,100 employees and file for bankruptcy. Solyndra received $535 million in 2009 to build its 2nd factory in Fremont.
On August 31st in 2011 Vermont emergency airlift operations brought ready-to-eat meals and water to residents left isolated from Hurricane Irene. The storm was blamed for at least 45 deaths in the continental US, one in Puerto Rico and 7 more in the Dominican Rep. and Haiti.
