On August 31st in 1886 An earthquake rocked Charleston, S.C., killing 60 people, according to the US Geological Survey.

On August 31st in 1887 Thomas A. Edison received a patent for his "Kinetoscope" - a device which produced moving pictures.

On August 31st in 1935 The act of exporting U.S. arms to belligerents was prohibited by an act signed by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
