On July 2nd in 1979 The U.S. Supreme Court in Jones v Wolf said a court could look into a church property dispute  but only if it studied the relevant documents in a neutral and non-religious spirit.

On July 2nd in 1980 President Jimmy Carter reinstated draft registration for males 18 years of age.

On July 2nd in 1987 18 illegal immigrants were found dead inside a locked boxcar near Sierra Blanca, Texas, in what authorities called a botched smuggling attempt
