On July 1st in 1973 Maryland declared that only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid in the state.

On July 1st in 1987 President Reagan nominated federal appeals court judge Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court, setting off a tempestuous confirmation process that ended with Bork's rejection in October by the Senate. 

On July 1st in 1989 The 1987 Montreal Protocol, an international treaty dealing with ozone-destroying pollutants, went into effect. The treaty sought to cut in half production of chemicals posing the greatest risk to ozone.

On July 1st in 1991 President Bush nominated federal appeals court judge Clarence Thomas to the US Supreme Court, beginning a confirmation process marked by allegations of sexual harassment.

On July 1st in 1998 President Clinton in Guilin and Shanghai, China, said to the Chinese that the environment must not be sacrificed for economic growth. China was reported to have the top ten of the world’s most polluted cities. Clinton urged his Chinese hosts to also open markets and battle corruption.


On July 1st in 1999 Exactly six months before the year 2000, Congress passed legislation to shield businesses from a potential flood of Y-2-K computer-related lawsuits.
