On July 4th in 1785 The first Fourth of July parade was held in Bristol, Rhode Island. It served as a prayerful walk to celebrate independence from England. The Bristol Fourth of July Parade is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States.
On July 4th in 1789 the 1st U.S. tariff act went into effect.
On July 4th in 1802 The United State Military Academy opened its doors at West Point, New York, welcoming the first 10 cadets.
On July 4th in 1817 Work began on the Erie Canal, more properly named the New York State Barge Canal. The canal connected Lake Erie with the Hudson and opened on October 26, 1825.
On July 4th in 1819 The Territory of Arkansas was created.
On July 4th in 1826 Construction of the Pennsylvania Grand Canal was begun.
