On June 13th in 1774 Rhode Island became the 1st colony to prohibit importation of slaves.
On June 13th in 1777 Marquis de Lafayette landed in the United States to assist the colonies in their war against England.
On June 13th in 1863 Confederate forces on their way to Gettysburg clashed with Union troops at the Second Battle of Winchester, Virginia.
On June 13th in 1888 The U.S. Congress created the Department of Labor.
On June 13th in 1920 The U.S. Post Office Department ruled that children may not be sent by parcel post.
On June 13th in 1933 U.S. Congress passed the Home Owners Refinancing Act, which authorized the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation. Large infusions of US federal cash went into institutions through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, chartered under President Hoover in 1932, and to households through the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation. THe infusions began the recovery from the Great Depression. This was noted in a 1983 paper by later Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.
