On May 9th in 2006 Iran's president declared in a letter to President Bush that democracy had failed worldwide and lamented "an ever-increasing global hatred" of the U.S. government. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice swiftly rejected the letter, saying it didn't resolve questions about Tehran's suspect nuclear program.
On May 9th in 2007 US VP Dick Cheney and Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki acknowledged problems in the pace of reducing violence in Iraq, but both pledged their governments would continue working together toward a solution. A majority of Iraqi lawmakers endorsed a draft bill calling for a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops and demanding a freeze on the number already in the country.

On May 9th in 2012 Voters in North Carolina approved a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as 'a union between a man and a woman' in a referendum. 35 per cent of precincts reported and unofficial return that 58 per cent of the votes were in favor of the amendment, with 42 against.
