On May 9th in 1913 The 17th amendment to the Constitution, providing for the election of US senators by popular vote rather than selection by state legislatures, was ratified.

On May 9th in 1914 President Wilson proclaimed Mother's Day.

On May 9th in 1945 U.S. officials announced that the midnight entertainment curfew was being lifted immediately. 

On May 9th in 1960 The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the pill Enovid as safe for birth control use. The pill was made by G.D. Searle and Company of Chicago. It was commissioned by birth control activist Margaret Sanger (opened the first birth control clinic in the United States, and established Planned Parenthood) and funded by heiress Katharine McCormick (biologist, suffragist, philanthropist and heir to the McCormick Family Fortune).

On May 9th in 1961 In a speech to the National Association of Broadcasters, Federal Communications Commission chairman Newton N. Minow condemned television programming as a "vast wasteland." 

On May 9th in 1974 The House Judiciary Committee opened hearings on whether to recommend the impeachment of President Nixon.
