On April 27th in 1677 Colonel Jeffreys became the governor of Virginia. 

On April 27th in 1805 US navy ships began to bombard the Tripoli port of Derna. Mercenaries gathered in Egypt and a small contingent of US Marines under former Tunis consul William Eaton attacked Tripoli and captured the city of Derna [which later became part of Libya].

On April 27th in 1813 Americans forces under Gen. Zebulon M. Pike (34) captured York (present day Toronto), the seat of government in Ontario; Pike was killed. 

On April 27th in 1860 Thomas J Jackson (later to be known as "Stonewall") was assigned to command Harpers Ferry.

On April 27th in 1861 President Lincoln signed a Bill that suspended the writ of habeas corpus. It requires a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court. By suspending it - there was no judgement required for a prisoner to be held. The suspension was lifted with the issuance of Proclamation 148 by Andrew Johnson at the end of the Civil War. The exceptions to Proclamation 148 were the States of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas, the District of Columbia, and the Territories of New Mexico and Arizona.

On April 27th in 1861 West Virginia seceded from Virginia after Virginia seceded from the Union.
